Read the following text about Tommy Hilfiger, a famous American designer.
I was lucky enough to get an interview with Tommy Hilfiger the other day. Being one of the top American designers, he is rather hard to get hold of, but eventually my persistence paid off and I was able to spend half a day with him and his team – quite amazing considering all his other commitments. He appeared for our appointment wearing his customary shades, a blue shirt, light trousers and a checked overcoat. Physically with his brown hair and vivid blue eyes, Tommy looks an energetic mid-forties – his actual age – but can also look older or younger depending on the particular situation.
We talked a little about the history of his company before going on to have a look at some of the new season’s fashion designs. After establishing his menswear collection – having particular success with his designer jeans and shoes – Tommy went on, in 1996, to establish a women’s clothing line, ‘Tommy’, which has had amazing success. His fashion design empire now includes athletic wear, underwear and kids wear as well as designer fragrances, cosmetics, toiletries for men and women, jewelry, other accessories and home furnishings.
As we watched his top models showing his new collection – slim-line jeans, red leather motorcycle jackets, tartan blouses and leather skirts in stunning combinations – he was constantly talking either to me about his various projects or on his cell phone, making plans for commercial soots, for flying off to Florida and for the numerous other things that make up a day in the life of one of the world’s most successful designers. He also told me that he had plans for future expansion but those would be for our next interview.

A few nights later, when I was surfing on the Internet as usual, I just came across a site that drew my attention. I immediately clicked on to it and, pretty quickly, the web page came up on the screen. On it was a picture of a man hugging what must have been a rubber shark. The heading read ‘Come to Fiji and meet your match’. I was curious so I read on. ‘Do you want to live life to the max?’, it said. ‘If so, leave your name and address and we’ll send you the relevant information’. And that’s exactly what I did.
After about a week, I received a package in the post. On opening it I found an information booklet. It said that Mami, an experienced local guide was offering a ‘once in a life time experience’. Apparently, this involved watching and feeding dangerous sharks in their natural habitat. By the time I finished reading, I had already made up my mind that I was going to Fiji. An image of Steven Spielberg’s film ‘Jaws’ came into my head sending shivers down my spine.
Three weeks later, I was on the island of Kandavu, one of the hundreds of islands that make up Fiji. Mami, the ‘shark man’ himself was at the airport to meet me and escort me to his resort as he liked to describe the small establishment he operated.
After a good night’s sleep, I was woken up early the next morning. As I had had some scuba diving experience already, Mami decided that we get straight down to business without saying too much about what we were about to do. I must have looked more than a little bit concerned because Mami looked at me and started laughing. He reassured me that I was going to be well taken care of. Then, we jumped into his speedboat and headed out to sea. When we had gone a few hundred meters, he stopped the boat and threw the anchor overboard. After we had got into our diving equipment and Mami had tied a line to the boat, we both threw ourselves into the sea. We descended about 30 meters before stopping. Then Mami took a large chunk of meat from his sack and attached it to a long pointed pole that we had brought down. Having done so, he extended the pole in the direction of the surface to enable us to remain a reasonable distance away from our finned friends. Within minutes, a number of sharks were circling in the water above us. My heart started racing. I stuck as close to Mami as I possibly could. I figured he had the necessary experience to save us from what seemed like a watery grave.
However, the sharks didn’t seem interested in us. Their attention was completely centered on the lump of raw meat. It wasn’t long before a shark tore it off the end of the pole. That’s when Mami attached another piece and handed me the pole. I must say I was terrified as I hesitantly lifted the pole up. Another shark almost immediately took my offering.
As Mami continued to feed the sharks, I had plenty of opportunity to study them in great detail. Their grey skin was covered in small sharp scales which gave it a leathery effect.
After half an hour, when we had finished our supply of meat, Mami indicated that it was time to return to the
surface. On looking up, I was surprised to see that the water had become very dark. That’s when I realized the importance of the line that was attached to the boat. The sharks had stirred up a cloud of sediment which would have made our way back to the boat very difficult. At that moment I really appreciated Mami’s expertise.
Now that I’m safely back on dry land, I can honestly say that my shark-watching adventure was quite risky but worthwhile, and I will be happy to entertain my grandchildren with it one day.
